California Penitentiary ( CCC ) is a state prison in the town of Susanville in Northern California. This is the minimum security facility.
Also located in Susanville is the Desert High Country Jail (California) (maximum security), and near the Federal Penitentiary, Herlong. The documentary, Prison Town, USA, is featured as part of P.O.V. series on PBS television in July 2007. It explored the effects on the rural Susanville residents living near CCC, the High Desert State Prison, and the nearby Federal Treaty, Herlong, which opened when the film was made. In "the hungry rural Americans at work,... the inhabitants see them as the last and only chance for a job after working in a dried wood or milk factory."
