The mattress protector is a removable bed item that is on top, or wraps, a mattress to protect it. Some mattress protectors also provide protection to people sleeping on mattresses of allergens and irritants such as dust mites, bed bugs, fungi, and dead skin (such as dandruff).

Protect the mattress

Although the surface of the mattress can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, it is very difficult to remove stains from most standard mattresses. Unprotected mattresses can become marked or streaked quickly enough because the natural sweat produced throughout the night passes through the standard fabric sheet and creates a characteristic yellowish brown color that has been absorbed onto the top surface of the mattress. Mattresses are also susceptible to many other contaminants.

The simplest form of mattress protector is a lightweight lined sheet. It provides minimal protection against fluids and little or no protection from dust mite allergens.

In addition to conventional natural fabrics, new forms of synthetic or topper protectors have emerged over the years including memory foam and spacer fabrics. These are more expensive than conventional shields but add to the advantages of pressure relief and in later cases, the ability to be washed.

Waterproof mattress protectors maintain mattress cleanliness by securing it from absorption of body excretion (such as sweat) or other liquids resulting from spills. These can be flat rubber flannel pads (usually used under a bed sheet for infants) or special breathable cover. Hot plastic pads for sleeping and changing shades of the mattress. A urethane laminate on cotton that has good wicking properties is an alternative to rubber flannel pads. Protectors with thin laminates that are not pulled too tightly in the bed will not change the feel of the bed. Also, the laminate is still breathing which means it will not trap body heat.

Most mattress covers will be removed if the mattress gets stained, so most people use mattress pads to prevent stains.

Protect your sleeper health

The use of mattress protectors is often recommended to individuals who are known to be susceptible to certain types of allergies, especially dust mites. Dust mites produce waste products that irritate the lining of the airways and lungs and especially with children can cause allergic reactions, asthma and can irritate skin conditions such as eczema. Mattress protector filtering allergen allergens full of zippers can provide an extra layer of protection between the user and their mattress, filtering out allergens that are known to trigger allergic and asthma symptoms.

For protection against bed bugs, mattresses and box springs should be completely covered without possible openings. Zipper cases are usually used for this purpose. This prevents new bed bugs from entering the mattress and box spring, and traps all existing bed bugs inside. Mattress protectors should be left for at least a full year to ensure that the bed bugs are trapped and the eggs are dead. If the cover is removed early, maternal infestation infections may recur.

Waterproof mattress protectors also reduce allergy symptoms by reducing the ability of the fungus to grow on the mattress. Uninfluenced mattress protectors are commonly used in children's nurseries and health care facilities.

A Norwegian study in 2002 found that foam mattresses are 4 to 8 times more likely to hold dust mites than spring mattresses.

Type

There are different types of mattress protectors. The injections are shields that protect the mattress directly, usually from bed bugs, and are often used in hotels. The protector is used to protect the mattress from wetting or allergic situations. In contrast, mattress pads and mattress covers are primarily used to provide user comfort features. Pads are thinner, while thick tops tend to be more comfortable and expensive.
