The Metropolitan Correctional Center, San Diego ( MCC San Diego ) is a US federal administrative detention facility in California that houses male and female detainees of all security levels. It is operated by the Federal Prison Bureau, a division of the US Department of Justice.
Most of the detainees held at MCC San Diego have pending cases in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. MCC San Diego also has prisoners serving a short sentence. MCC San Diego is an administrative facility designed to accommodate federal prisoners of all security levels, including male and female offenders. The building is 23 floors and can accommodate 1,300 inmates.

History
MCC San Diego opened in December 1974 and represents the first shift in the Bureau of Prisons to a new generation of high-rise prison buildings, along with MCC New York and MCC Chicago.

The famous incident
On March 18, 2011, Laura E. Duffy's office, US Attorney for the Southern District of California, announced that Brandon McKinney, a former correctional officer at MCC San Diego, had been charged for allegedly having sex with a woman. inmates while on duty on July 20, 2010. Because sexual relations between prison staff and inmates were prohibited by law without consent, McKinney was dismissed and accused of assault. McKinney later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 months in prison on August 10, 2012.
The Duffy Office issued a press release on July 18, 2013 announcing that Kirk Borja, an inmate at MCC San Diego, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute shabu-shabu and possess heroin in order to distribute it. Borja was initially charged with the cost of methamphetamine trading after his arrest in January 2012 as part of Operation Carnalismo, an investigation of Mexican Mafia gangs. Borja also acknowledged in his request to hide heroin inside his body while he was at MCC San Diego and plans to distribute it to other inmates before being discovered by correctional officers. Borja is still detained at MCC San Diego awaiting punishment.
