Smith Corona is the US thermal label manufacturer, direct thermal label, and thermal tape used in warehouses for major barcode labels. After the typewriter and major US mechanical calculator maker, it developed aggressively during the 1960s to become a broad-based industry conglomerate whose product was expanded to paint, food and paper. The sector of mechanical calculators was removed in the early 1970s by the production of cheap electronic calculators, and the typewriter business collapsed in the mid-1980s due to the introduction of PC-based word processors.

Smith Corona addresses this by producing word processing machines such as the 1400 PWP model. Its competitors are Brother, Olivetti, Adler, Olympia and IBM. At the end of 2010, Smith Corona entered the ribbon market and industry labels.

Companies no longer produce typewriters or calculators, but produce large numbers of barcodes and shipping labels and thermal tapes used in thermal transfer printers. Their facility is in Cleveland, Ohio. Smith Corona now competes with supply distributors Zebra Technologies, packaging companies such as Uline and other private companies.

History

The company started in 1886, when the Smith Premier Typewriter Company was founded by Lyman's brothers Cornelius Smith, Wilbert Smith, Monroe C. Smith and Hurlburt Smith. The typewriter was the first to use a double keyboard, but it was not the first typewriter to type uppercase and lowercase letters; the honor belonged to Remington # 2 which was introduced in 1877-78, a decade before Smith Premier's first model was placed in the market... Ads "cunning boast" that there is "the key to every character!"

In 1889, Smith-Premier , the first typewriter to bear Smith's name, was manufactured at the Lyman C. Smith gun factory at South Clinton Street in Syracuse, New York. Alexander T. Brown, an employee, created the machine, and Wilbert Smith funded the construction of a prototype.

Factory weapons

Lyman Smith and Wilbert Smith owned a weapons factory in Syracuse and after they hired Brown, he sparked Wilbert's interest in financing and improving typewriters. The parts of the typewriter are surprisingly similar to the rifle "so producing a typewriter in the gun factory is logical and easy."

The business went so well, in 1888, the Smith brothers stopped the production of rifles and produced typewriters with the help of their younger siblings, Monroe Smith and Hurlburt Smith.

Smith Brothers

Smith Premier Typewriter Company was founded in 1886 by the brothers; Lyman Cornelius Smith, Wilbert Smith, Monroe C. Smith and Hurlbut Smith who was born in Lisle, New York.

The eldest brother, Leroy Smith, invented the Peerless typewriter in 1891, which is "very similar to" Smith-Premier . It has a double keyboard that is equal to 76 characters and also has a "blind type" so the typist can not see what is being printed.

Union Crusher Machinery Company

During 1893, Smith joined the Union Typewriter Company, a belief in Syracuse that included rival companies Remington, Caligraph, Densmore and Yost.

Not long after that, Union took action and blocked the Premier Smith Typewriter Company using a new front attack design, which allowed typists to see the paper as they typed. As a result, the brother Smith quit in 1903 and founded L. C. Smith & amp; Machine Company Type Bros. . The new company soon released "L.C. Smith & Model Brooch No. 2", which was a strange start because, a full year later, they released "L.C. Smith & Bros. Model No. 1." Carl Gabrielson created both models.

In 1906, Rose Machine Company from New York City marketed the first successful portable typewriter. They were bought by Smith in 1909, renamed the Standard Typewriter Company, and moved to Groton, New York.

Machine type service

To promote the use of typewriters, the company began by offering typing services at corporate headquarters located at the corner of East Genesee and Washington street in Syracuse. An advertisement on December 27, 1904, for Smith Premier typewriters, touted the Department of Employees offering services such as finding "competent (male or female) stenographers to operate what brand even machines. "The company advertises that they can provide immediate service, save clients time and trouble and" check "all applicants. The operator can perform tasks such as a stenographer, typewriter, telegrapher and bookkeeper.

Corona Type Machine Company

With the success of their Corona model in 1914, the Standard Typewriter Company was renamed again and became the Corona Type Company. Smith Corona was created when L. C. Smith & amp; Brooch. united with Corona Typewriter in 1926, with L. C. Smith & amp; Brooch makes typewriter and Corona typewriter makes portable.

World War II-action bolt M1903A3

Production shifted from typewriters to various military weapons and spare parts during World War II. In October 1942, Smith-Corona Typewriter Company began producing Springfield M1903A3 rifles at its plant in Syracuse, with help from Remington Arms and High Standard Manufacturing Company. The barrel subcontractors provide an unusual collector value to some of these 234,580 Springfield rifles. Serial numbers 3608,000 to 3707999 and 4708000 to 4992000 carry the Smith-Corona name on the receiver ring. While many of the M1903A3 rifles manufactured by Remington have 2-groove barrels, most of the rifles assembled by Smith Corona use a 4-groove barrel produced by the High Standard, and about five thousand barrels completed by the High Standard are from 6-groove barrel blank made by Savage Weapon.

Bolt on Remington M1903A3 rifle has a parkerized layer and stamped with the letter R on the root of the handle; while the Smith Corona bolt is blued and usually stamped with the letter X on top of the handle, although some are not marked. Some extractors on the Smith Corona rifle are stamped with the letter S at the bottom. The stamped steel fittings are generally opaque, though some are parked at the end of production. The butt plate of the Smith Corona rifle is checked with 10 or 11 lines per inch, while Remington uses 16 lines per inch. The rifle production ceased on 19 February 1944, when the standard M1 Garand rifle inventory was considered adequate. Several rifles were never issued, while others were reconditioned in the government arsenals after service use. Reconditioned rifles often have replacement parts from the manufacture of Remington or Springfield. Most of the rifles were kept after the war until many were sold through the Civil Marksmanship Program in the early 1960s.

Middle Ages

After the war, the company concentrated on making its typewriter more convenient and efficient for use in business offices. Sales of typewriters peaked after World War II; In response to a typewriter request capable of producing faster output, Smith Corona introduced an electric typewriter in 1955. An electrical portable device, aimed at authors and business people, but was subsequently purchased extensively for home use general, introduced in 1957. The new portable electric typewriter will be an important tool for generations of high school students and US students.

In a move to diversify into the wider office technology sector, Smith Corona bought Kleinschmidt Corporation in 1956 and Marchant Calculator in 1958, changed its corporate name to Smith-Corona Marchant Inc. Also in 1958, Smith Corona acquired Typewriters UK, Ltd from West Bromwich, England, a company that makes small portable typewriters. The company rediscovered an electric train engine in 1960, the same year moved from Syracuse to Cortland, New York and opened a new headquarters on Park Avenue in New York City. 1960 also saw the first company plunge into the business of photocopiers with various Vivicopy machines, as well as an accounting machine market with various punch cards and tape products manufactured in Germany by Kienzle. Still on the acquisition path, SCM acquired St. Louis Microstatic Company in 1961. This merger brought the Model 33 Electrostatic Copier, which went on sale in April 1962.

Thus in the mid-1960s SCM has become a major supplier to the office supply market, offering photocopiers, typewriters and counting machines.

In 1962, Smith Corona changed its corporate name to SCM Corporation and adopted the Tribar SCM logo. In 1967, SCM bought Allied Paper Corporation for $ 33 million. The new paper making division is named SCM Allied Paper. In the same year, SCM also joined the paint company The Glidden. Glidden is rearranged as SCM Glidden-Durkee division. One reason for this merger is that Glidden sees SCM's offer as a "White Knight" offer in preference to an alternative offer from Greatamerica Corporation in Dallas, Texas and General Anniline & New York Movie. In turn, the acquisition puts (now much larger) SCM itself out of reach of any potential hostile bidder of the moment. It is also hoped that Glidden research into paper coatings will be useful in the SCM copier business.

The "Letterpack" 1967 product is a handset where personal voicemail can be recorded on a small ribbon cartridge that can be delivered to the receiver (which requires another handset to play back). The cartridges last 3, 6 or 10 minutes, and a pair of handsets cost $ 7.

In 1965, SCM was instrumental in developing smaller computers for the business market. The basic computer consists of electric typewriters, plug boards, card readers, paper readers and tapes. Clients will purchase computers and programs designed specifically for their operations. This data processing division was eventually sold to Control Data Corporation in the early 70s.

In 1966, SCM bought consumer products company Proctor Silex, a toaster manufacturer and a can opener.

In 1973, a new typewriter manufacturing facility, employing 1,300 people, was established in Singapore.

Cartridge ribbon

In 1973, SCM introduced a cartridge ribbon that eliminates the long-standing problem of obtaining stained ink radius from an ink ribbon ribbon hand replacement mill.

Financial issues

The calculator market was ruined by an inexpensive electronic pocket calculator in the mid-1970s. The typewriter market was also undermined by cheap imports from the Far East, this being a contributing factor in the closure of the West Bromwich plant, England, in 1981. In 1985, personal computers were widely used for word processing, and SCM was launched. their first portable word processor, along with the first portable typewriter to include electronic spelling functionality. But these products are not enough to counter the diminishing size of the typewriter market. This, and the turmoil of related companies to become a conglomerate that many different operating divisions do not have an inherent business logic, makes it vulnerable to expropriation. Thus, in 1986, SCM was taken over by Hanson Plc, a UK-based bird feeder capitalist. Hanson immediately discarded some SCM divisions, and headquarters building in New York City, for a significant profit.

The company moved the remaining typewriter manufacturing operations from Cortland to Mexico in 1995 and announced it cut 750 jobs as a result of a continuing sales decline. Shortly thereafter, the company declared bankruptcy. Since 1995, the company has concentrated on the sale of portable electronic typewriters, as well as typewriters and word processors. The company's current electronics model features an LCD screen, built-in dictionary, and spell check and grammar features.

Market thermal label

After being acquired by a private company during its second bankruptcy in 2000, Smith Corona briefly moved all typewriter production and typewriter manufacturing to Cleveland, Ohio. In five years Smith Corona stopped producing all the typewriters. As the business of typewriter supply continues to decline, Smith Corona decides to utilize its expertise in ribbon and thermal technology previously used in the typewriter business in the burgeoning hot label market.
