Sullivan Sanctuary is a prison for New York State prison security prison for male detainees located in Fallsburg, New York. It is operated by the New York State Department of Corrections.
Sullivan is located on an area of ​​850 acres (3.4Ã, km ²) which also contains the Woodbourne Correctional Facility, a medium security prison. The state funding was adjusted for Sullivan after losing Rikers Island as a state facility in 1980 (the facility was returned to New York City). The buildings are built on a sharp slope overlooking the Neversink River valley.
To build access roads to the prison, the New York State Department of Corrections bought the Lebowitz Pine View Hotel, a 1.2-hectare (0.25 km²) property, in 1983. Initially, some prisoners from the Woodburne facility were moved and housed in the hotel building, which operated as a Woodburne annex to the completion of Sullivan in 1985. It operated as a minimum Sullivan security annex until 2010 when the annex section was closed.
Sullivan is currently home between 560 and 580 inmates in four pods, arranged in a circle. Eighty-six percent of the inmates were jailed for violent conduct, and 60% served a life sentence.
Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, a non-profit organization was established to provide college education to imprisoned people in an effort to help reduce recidivism and poverty while strengthening families and communities. In 1998, as part of a harsh campaign for crime, state and federal funding for college programs inside the prison was stopped. Understanding the positive impact of education on the transformation and rehabilitation of imprisoned people, prisoners at Sing Sing Correctional Facility reach academic and academic volunteers to develop graduate degree programs. Under the leadership of Dr. Anne Reissner, Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison was established to restore college education at Sing Sing through private funding. Hudson Link now runs pre-college and college degree programs in Fishkill, Greene, Sing Sing, Sullivan, and Taconic Correctional Facilities.
