History

The prison was opened in April 1995. In 1996, Chowchilla City was given permission to perform an adjacent VSPW annexation.

Ted Koppel interviewed many staff, including Dr. Anthony DiDomenico, chief medical officer of VSPW, in October 1999 for a series of episodes of Nightline . In the explanation, the doctor was quoted as saying, "I have heard [of a certain woman, in a prisoner approved by the CDCR] that inmates tell me that they intentionally want to be checked [ie, receive a pelvic exam].This is just the contact of the man they are get. "After the episode of Nightline , only DiDomenico is moved" to work at the desk in Sacramento "for his description.

A California 2000 state legislative assembly session in October on the medical issues of women prisoners was held at VSPW. At the trial, about 15 inmates "explained a serious medical problem" at the VSPW and the Central California Women's Facility; However, a doctor representing the California Department of Improvement stated that he felt female prisoners "get the best care possible."

Beginning in April 2007, VSPW received several inmates from the California Rehabilitation Center after the closure of the women's wing in the prison. The population in VSPW "swelled by 8 percent"; furthermore, "the designated supervisor of the medical court" stated that the VSPW medical system may "collapse entirely" because of extra detention.

Inmate program

Budget cuts in 2009 "drastically reduced the number of academic, vocational and SAP tasks" (page 3). The recidivism rate at VSPW is about 72%. There are many Self-Help programs for inmates ranging from a group of 12 facilitated prisoners like Alcoholic Anonymous, Battered Women, Domestic Violence and Narcotics Anonymous.

In addition to self-help programs facilitated by inmates, outside the volunteer groups also held classes and workshops, some of which have been featured in national and international media. Crossroads allow teenagers at risk to visit VSPW facilities and hear from volunteer inmates about life in prison. The program is featured in an episode on the Arts and Entertainment Television Network called "Beyond Scared Straight". Freedom to Choose is a voluntary service project from Santa Monica University that has taught non-compliance skills and pardon workshops at VSPW twice a year since March 2004, and is featured in a documentary awarded Best Documentary Film at the Evolve Movie Showcase, the American Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009.
