The Washington Penitentiary (also called Walla Walla Penitentiary Institute) is Washington State Department Prison's prison located in Walla Walla, Washington. With a capacity of 2,200 operations, it is the second largest prison in the state (after the Coyote Ridge Correction Center) and is surrounded by wheat fields. It was opened 132 years ago in 1886, three years before the state.

This is Washington State's death penalty site and where the execution was carried out. The method of execution is lethal and hanging injections. However, Governor Jay Inslee has postponed execution when he was in office.

Located at 1313 N. 13th Avenue, it is commonly known as "the Walls" among inmates and "The Hill" for locals. Penitentiary is sometimes known as Beton Mama, from a book with the same title by Ethan Hoffman and John McCoy. Elsewhere in Washington, and also so far in the surrounding countries, the name Walla Walla is a metonym for prison. Penitentiary is the subject of the song "Walla Walla" by American punk rock band The Offspring.

History

The Washington State Penitentiary opened 132 years ago in 1886, making it the oldest operational prison in Washington state. Over a one-year period, starting in March 2002, more than a hundred inmates and staff at the Washington Correctional Institution were infected with Campylobacter jejuni. During this period, five groups of infections were identified, and genetic testing showed that all bacteria were indistinguishable from each other. The source of this outbreak is unknown, but contamination through pigeon feces, as well as unsafe food handling procedures, is examined.
