Histori
The original Kinross Destruction Facility closed in October 2015, with most of the inmates and names moving to the previously closed Hiawatha Prison.
Original facility
The original Kinross Correctional Facility opened on January 16, 1978 at the base of the former Kincheloe Air Force Base Base with an original capacity of 495 prisoners - which increased to about 700 shortly after. At 113 acres (46 acres) it is the largest fenced area in any state prison in Michigan.
The original facility closed in October 2015, having gained the ability to accommodate nearly 1,600 detainees. Around 1,280 inmates were transferred to the previously closed Hiawatha Prison and 300 were transferred to adjacent Chippewa Correctional Facilities. The move was made when it was determined that it would be cheaper to update the security at the Hiawatha facility than the original prison. The original facility was larger and housed more prisoners but was changed from the Air Force barracks in 1978, while Hiawatha was deliberately built as a prison.
Hiawatha Prison Facilities
The Hiawatha Correctional Facility (HTF) was built as a prison near the Kinross facility and opened in 1989.
This facility was closed in August 2009.
It reopened and renamed the Kinross Correctional Facility when it closed in October 2015.
The free trial
For two years, four inmates dug tunnels from their cells outside the perimeter fence of the original facility. The plot was only discovered in March 2007, after the tunnel was completed but the runaway had to be postponed to find a vacation driver.
On July 15, 2010, three inmates, all men convicted of mass murder, hijacked a supply truck in jail and attempted to flee from its original facility by breaking it through a fence. The truck can not penetrate, stuck on a razor wire. Seth Privacky, in prison for the murder of five members of his family, was shot and killed by guards as he tried to escape from the truck. The other two gave up when the truck jammed.
