Plot
In the 1960s Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) lived in a small village of Gehlaur near Gaya, Bihar, India with his family including his wife Phaguniya Devi (Radhika Apte) and his son. There is a rocky mountain near his village that people must climb or travel to get access to medical care in the nearby town of Wazirganj. One day Manjhi's wife (while pregnant) crashed while trying to cross the mountain and eventually died while giving birth to a girl, after which Manjhi decided to carve a way through it. When he starts hammering the hill people call him a madman, but that only strengthens his resolve further. After 22 years of back-breaking work, Manjhi carved along 360 feet, 25 feet in place and 30 feet wide.
Manjhi died in 2007. The movie script records that 52 years after he began to break the mountain, 30 years after he was finished and 4 years after his death, the government finally made its way to Gehlaur in 2011.
