Health issues
In the 1958 edition of his bestselling book. Intensive Baby and Child Care Book, pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock warned to put the baby on his back, writing, "if [the baby] throws up, he is more likely to choke on vomit." However, further research shows that putting young infants in a prone position increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A 2005 study concluded that "a systematic review of preventable risk factors for SIDS from 1970 will lead to an earlier recognition of the risk of sleeping on the front and may have prevented more than 10,000 infant deaths in the UK and at least 50,000 in Europe, the US, and Australasia. "
It is recommended that people at risk of obstructive sleep apnea sleep on their side and with 30 à ° or higher of upper body height. Snoring, which may (but is not always) an indicator of obstructive sleep apnea, can also be reduced by sleeping on one side.
Modern scientific studies have suggested the beneficial effects of the right lateral decubitus position on the heart. Specifically, one study assessed the autonomic effects of three sleep positions (supine, left lateral decubitus, and right lateral decubitus) in healthy subjects using spectral analysis of spectral heart rate. The results showed that the largest heart vagal activity when the subject was in the right lateral decubitus position.
Islam
In Islamic culture, some sleeping positions are encouraged while others are discouraged by the practice (Sunnah) and Muhammad's recommendations. Thus, many Muslims sleep on their right side, in particular, in the early part of sleep. Muhammad said, "Every time you go to bed, perform ablution like that for prayer, and lie on your right side" [SM 2710].
