Economic development
In 1992 the federally recognized tribe established the WinnaVegas Casino to generate income and provide employment. His council has legalized the sale of alcohol on the reservation, to safeguard revenue from sales taxes and related fees previously paid by residents through off-reservation merchants to the state. It also now directly regulates sales and can provide care for individuals and families affected by alcoholism. In 2007, 63% of the federally recognized tribes in the lower 48 states have legalized the sale of alcohol for the same reason.
In 1994, based on a long-term view of growth, the tribe established Ho-Chunk, Inc., an economic development company, which has contributed greatly to new resources in the reservation. Started with one employee, it has grown to 1400 employees operating in 10 states and five foreign countries. Revenue has been provided for development in 1995 from Little Priest Tribal College; as well as new community schools, hospitals and a strong housing-building program of more than $ 1 million, with the development of Ho-Chunk Village.
The economic upswing has allowed rates to improve the quality of life in reservations, such as Lance Morgan, CEO of the company, discussed at a forum at Bellevue University in Omaha, Nebraska on April 2, 2010. Ho-Chunk, Inc. has been awarded for small business, and has started a strong housing construction program in collaboration with the federal program. Its leaders are featured on Native American Entrepreneurs , airing in 2009 on PBS. Ho-Chunk, Inc. operates 26 subsidiaries in areas such as information technology, construction, government contracts, green energy, retail, wholesale distribution, marketing, media and transportation.
