History

At the end of World War II, Lake City Naval Air Station was disabled and Columbia Forestry School (CFS) was founded in 1947, utilizing the remaining military structures. At that time, Lake City claimed to be "Forestry Capitol of the World". The first few years had very low registration and very little funds, causing the school president to ask for help from the Florida Legislature. Instead of providing additional funds, politicians directed the University of Florida to take over the management of the school. Columbia Forestry School became University of Florida Forest Ranger School in 1950.

Throughout the volatile 1960s, schools had fewer than 400 students. In 1961, the school was invited to become one of 28 two-year educational facilities within the country master plan for education as Lake City Junior College . Increased funding allowed wooden buildings to be replaced with brick structures after multiple fires burned in 1963. However, some World War II era buildings remained, although largely unused, until the mid-1970s, when the latter was eventually destroyed. The "Junior" was dropped and the word, "Community" was placed in the name of the college in 1970 to emphasize that the school offers an occupational and cultural enrichment education for the local population.

Beginning in 2008, the Florida legislature began giving name changes to one of the 28 community colleges that requested it. By deleting the community from their name, or replacing the country , the college will be eligible to add a bachelor's degree program on a limited basis. On November 10, 2009, the LCCC Supervisory Board voted 8-1 to change the name Lake City Community College to Florida Gateway College, effective July 1, 2010. This is the fifth name change in the history of college.

Campus

FGC occupies 132 acres (53Ã, ha) of natural pine, with over twenty-five buildings arranged with original azalea bushes and myrtle crepe trees. Florida Leader Magazine appoints LCCC as the most beautiful college campus in Florida. FGC operates 3 satellite locations (Macclenny, Cross City & Bell) in the surrounding area including within the college service area. At this "store center", locals can attend the class directly, take distance learning courses or talk to internet advisors and pick up brochures, catalogs, schedules and forms.

On May 2, 2008, Granger Hall closed its doors as a student-84 meeting hall at Lake City Community College. It is one of only two colleges to offer housing on campus in Florida but is used primarily for students on athletic scholarships.

Academic profile

A record 883 students graduated from Lake City Community College in the school year 2002-03; However, registration has since declined. In 2006, enrollment was 2,736, of which 1,084 were full-time students. Schools have an open admissions policy for all programs except nursing, golf course operations and related health programs.

In 2006, the most popular areas of study were Corrections, Liberal Arts & amp; Science, Nursing, and Emergency Medical Technology.

Art and liberal science

The majority of students follow the path to get an Associate of Arts degree to transfer to the top division school to pursue a Bachelor's Degree. Students are encouraged to choose one of 44 courses with elective courses to be accepted at the next educational institution.

Cosmetology

Makeup is a one-year program (three semesters) that prepares students to pass the Florida state exam to become licensed beauty experts. The program started in the mid-1960s, and enrolled full classes for over twenty years, before fighting during the 1990s. The program is open to full-time students when the evening program begins for the summer of 2003.

Forest ranger

Forest Technology , which includes training in wood shipping & amp; surveys, timber procurement and logging operations, are offered on campus for more than 60 years. The first participants received certificates after completing the 12-month program, but graduates in 1970 invested two years to receive an Associate of Science degree in Forest Technology. At that time, the LCCC was one of only two, 2-year forest programs east of the Mississippi River.

Timber Harvesting Technician changed from a certificate program to a US degree in Forest Technology Engineering in 1974, but merged into Forest management in 1989. More than half of the instructions were given in the field, where direct experience is emphasized. Over the years, technology reduced the number of jobs available in forestry, and by the mid-1990s, there were fewer than 30 students, so the program was scaled back and moved to the Landscape Operations Landscape department. Ten years later, registration has dropped to more than 20, which does not justify the two instructors, so the left one and the program is changed back into a one-year certificate in Forest Operations. For several years, class sizes are in adolescence, and program completion rates are below 50%. After graduating from class in May 2010, the Forestry program was suspended due to lack of interest.

Golf golf course

Associate of Science degree in Field Operations of Golf and Landscape Technology began in 1967 and throughout the 1970s & amp; The 1980s were one of the most popular vocational programs. The three-year curriculum is the only accredited program of its kind in the US and includes two paid summer interns between challenging academic semesters. The program is recognized as one of the best and graduates have been the superintendents of golf courses in famous facilities throughout the United States.

Nursing

The nursing program at FGC began in 1964 and is now part of the Allied Health Department which includes a dozen other health care programs. Nursing consists of four courses:

  1. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), which runs 11 months
  2. Registered Nurse (RN), which is a two-year study program; some students moved to upper division schools to complete a bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  3. LPN to the RN bridge, which can be completed in 14 months as a full-time student or 12 months in the afternoon/weekend fast program.
  4. Patient Care Assistant, which takes 11 months to complete

To meet RN's shortcomings, bridge programs are made for existing LPNs. However, most working LPNs can not take a year's leave and return to school. In 2005, Lake City Medical Center donated $ 130,000 to finance the new 12-month fast track bridge program. Classes are held two nights a week with a clinical experience on Saturday.

In 2003, the FGC nursing program was limited to 24 students. In June, 2008 the number has increased to 60. In January 2013, the number of students received in the Traditional RN Program increased to 100.

Correction

The certification program for Penitentiary officers began in the early 1970s as a collaborative effort between Florida colleges and the Department of Improvement and was offered in day and night schedules. The county's five county districts include more than a dozen state detention facilities including large prisons, labor camps and forest camps. The LCCC is the first community college in the state to offer an associate degree that bridges the gap between correction and law enforcement. On February 1, 2008 Dr. Chuck Hall, President of the LCCC announced that the correctional prisoner training program at LCCC will end by the end of February 2008. The Corrections Department began training internally, and the college lost between 450-650 students. every year.

On March 12, 2008, the college announced that at the end of the 2007-2008 school year, Lake City Community College athletics programs would be dissolved. The proposal was made by college president Charles Hall and endorsed by the college board. The reasons given are finance, including expected reductions in state funding, lower enrollment, program reductions after the Florida Recovery Department withdrew training programs, athletic dormitories and food service costs and prospects for similar cuts in the following school year. The school joins Edison Community College in Fort Myers, Community College Valencia in Orlando and the Florida Keys Community College, near Key West as the only four of the 28 colleges in Florida with no intergroup sports program.
