Franklin Marvin Fisher (born December 13, 1934) is an American economist. He has taught economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1960.

Biography

Fisher attended Harvard University, where he was appointed Phi Beta Kappa in 1955 and received a Bachelor of Arts Summa cum laude in 1956, attending a Masters degree in 1957 and a Ph.D.. in Economics from Harvard in 1960. His doctoral thesis was titled A Prior Information and Timeline Analysis .

Fisher married Ellen Paradise Fisher in 1958. They have three children, and eight grandchildren.

He taught Fellow at Harvard from 1956 to 1957, Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard (1957-59), Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago (1959-60), Assistant Professor of Economics at MIT (1960-65), Associate Professor of Economics at MIT (1962-65), and Professor of Economics at MIT from 1965 to 2004. Currently he is Jane Berkowitz Carlton and Dennis William Carlton Professor of Microeconomics, Emeritus at MIT. He has been the director of the National Economic Research Bureau since 1989.

Fisher's areas of specialization in economics are industrial organizations, microeconomics, and econometrics. He has written extensively in antitrust economics. He has served as an expert witness in matters involving antitrust, contract dispute, appraisal, damage, and trademark infringement for years. He was a major economic witness for IBM in antitrust confrontation with the US Department of Justice, a case imposed by the government in 1982 after 13 years. He served in a similar role on behalf of the US Department of Justice in the case of the United States v. Microsoft.

Publications

Fisher is a writer or coauthor of hundreds of scientific articles and many books. He has written books that address antitrust issues. In 1983, he co-wrote Folded, Rotated and Chalked: Economic and US vs. Economic Analysis IBM . This book is about the US antitrust case. vs. IBM , where Fisher is the premier expert for defense. In 1985, he edited Antitrust and Regulation: Essays in Memory of John J. McGowan, containing the original essay by economists and lawyers discussing important aspects of antitrust and regulation.

He wrote a monograph sponsored by the Econometric Society on economic theory of general equilibrium and disequilibria:

Awards

Fisher received the John Bates Clark Medal in 1973. He has been a Fellow of the Econometric Society since 1963 and from 1968 to 1977 he was the editor of the Society of Econometrics. He was President of the Econometric Society in 1979. He is also a member of the American Economic Association. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1969.
