Kilby Prison facility is the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) prison for the state of Alabama, located at Mt. Meigs, an unrelated area in Montgomery County, Alabama, with a capacity to accommodate over 1,400 prisoners. Kilby serves as a reception and processing center for all Alabama state inmates. Currently, the warden of the Kilby Correctional Facility is Phyllis J. Billups. Female Montgomery Facility, ADOC facility for women, is located behind Kilby.

Histori
In 1922 and 1923, the State of Alabama built and opened Kilby Prison, located at 2,550 hectares (10.3 km 2 ) four miles (6 km) north of the State Capitol. It was named in honor of Thomas Erby Kilby), governor of Alabama (1919-23).
Electric chair
Kilby Prison was the place where Alabama executed prisoners who had been sentenced to death, and when in 1920 the method changed from hanging to electricity, the electric chair, "(Big) Yellow Mama", was built in Kilby. The chair was built by a master carpenter, Ed Mason, a man born in London, England, who has been convicted of robbery; he was convicted of breaking into six homes in Mobile to pay off gambling debt. After being promised leave or even parole by Kilby's jailer, TJ Shirley, he built a four-foot, four-foot, perpendicular, 150-pound seat from maple, and named it "Plain Bill" to Alabama governor William W. Brandon, whom he hoped would forgive him. Mason was granted leave by Bibb Graves, the successor to Brandon, and soon left the country never to return. State engineer Harry C. Norman installed the power lines; "Once the switch is thrown, a prisoner will get the first power shock, the current will decrease and automatically build up to 2250 volts for a second electric shot". The crown made of metal wire is mounted over the head of the prisoner, with a damp sponge to perform strength, and the same electrode both on the lower left foot. Norman will execute the first victim, Horace DeVaughn, who was convicted of two murders, on April 8, 1927, but refused and quit his job a few days earlier. DeVaughn was executed, but it took four electric shots to kill him.
On February 9, 1934, five men were executed within thirty minutes: Bennie Foster, John Thompson, Harie White, Ernest Waller, and Solmon Roper. It's all black. According to the Alabama Bench and Bar Historical Association, the majority of those executed in Alabama are black, and many do not have proper legal representation; others are mentally incompetent. The last person to be executed at Kilby was William Bowen, on January 15, 1965; the execution was suspended while the US Supreme Court considered the method of execution.
Kilby is flattened and rebuilt
Damage after forty-five years led to the closure of the prison in 1970. The prisoners were transferred to the new Holman Penitentiary.
The newly erected Kilby as Mt. Meigs Medical and Diagnostic Center in December 1969 and has an original capacity of 440 inmates. Kilby is designed with on-site hospitals, dormitories, and one hundred and two cell cells to facilitate his role as a receiving center for all male prisoners held by the state of Alabama.
On September 1, 2016, a corrective officer was stabbed in the head by a prisoner. He died three weeks later.

Health prisoners and life skills programs on offer, including Anonymous Narcotics, Alcoholics Anonymous, Volunteers in Correction, sex therapist therapy, anger management therapy, alcohol and drug abuse counseling, individual and group mental health therapy, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) , Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, and chapel services. In addition, Kilby develops his own fresh produce in the garden of correctional facilities, and runs an industrial and graphic art printing factory.
