The Putnam County Jail is located in Greencastle, Indiana. It houses around 145 adult men and women. The prison houses three categories of detainees: county inmates awaiting trial, state convicts serving less than one year, and inmates from the Indiana Department of Improvement who have been placed in prisons to reduce density in state prisons.

History
The original Putnam County jail dates back to 1836 when Isaac Mahan, Wesley White and Hudson Brackney were directed to build a new prison. The prison was completed in 1840. It lasted until the early 1930s. The new prison was built under the supervision of the famous former prison inspector Alcatraz. The prison was completed in 1939 and has a locking mechanism similar to Alcatraz. It went on until the early 1990s when Sheriff Gerry Hoffa reported that because of the problem of population density, Putnam County needed a new jail. A new 5.6 million dollar prison was built in December 1995.

Program
Putnam County jail offers programs. One of them is G.E.D. program, which allows inmates to take courses and get their high school diploma. The prison also provides inmates with Thinking for a Change; the program is run by the local Community Correction and helps inmates improve their overall decision-making skills. There are also some religious groups and volunteer organizations that visit prisoners every week to help keep faith and hope in the inmates who choose this option.
Contract with Repair Department
Putnam County Jails work with the Correction Department (DOC) and take some of their prisoners because of overcrowding. Although the numbers vary each day, there are about 80 DOC prisoners in prison. The DOC paid Putnam County $ 35 a day to every prisoner held there.
Methamphetamine and illegal drugs
The prevalence of drugs, especially methamphetamine and marijuana, has resulted in a large dope for Putnam County Law Enforcement. The prison is run by the sheriff's office of Putnam. This means that money seized by illegal drugs is given to a drug duty unit to help combat this growing drug problem. Recently, large medicinal herbs have been made, directly generated from the drug industry that switches more to rural areas than in urban areas. On June 17, 2004, police in Putnam County seized more than 149 pounds of marijuana and over $ 1,000 in cash from two people traveling on Interstate 70.
