History

With initial success efforts by the Matson Navigation Company to provide steamboat trips to America's richest families on the way to Hawaii, a series of resort hotels were built in Honolulu in the early twentieth century, including Moana Hotel (1901) and Honolulu. Seaside Hotel, both on Waikiki Beach, and Alexander Young Hotel in downtown Honolulu (1903).

In 1925, the Hotel Territorial Company, at the time the owner of the three hotels, decided to destroy Seaside Honolulu and replace it with a large modern resort. They sign Warren & amp; Wetter to design Royal Hawaiian Hotel . The vast pentonal concrete stucco surface of a Spanish/Moor-style complex, built at a cost of over $ 5 million (1927 price), is surrounded by a garden of fifteen hectares (60,700 mÃ,²). The H-shaped layout features 400 rooms, each with a bath and balcony. The complex has a golf course outside the hotel, today known as the Waialae Country Club.

The hotel began operations on February 1, 1927, with a black tie gala attended by over 1,200 guests, and quickly became an icon of Hawaii's glorious days. The hotel was a great success, and in 1928 the island counted more than 20,000 visitors for the first time.

The Great Depression struck in 1929, broke the Territorial Hotel Company. In 1932, Matson Line bought corporate hotels.

During World War II, Royal Hawaiian was used exclusively by the US military as an R & R. Blockage access blocking of convoy wire from adjacent beach.

The hotel restored most of its customers after 1945. It was sold, along with the rest of the Matson hotels in Hawaii, to the Sheraton Hotels and Resorts network in 1959.

During the 1960s, the "Pink Palace" was home to the "Sea Concert" which was broadcasted daily through the Armed Forces Radio Network (AFN).

In September 1974, Japanese businessman's brothers Kenji Osano and Masakuni Osano bought Royal Hawaiian Hotel from ITT Sheraton. They formed Kyo-ya Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Kokusai Kogyo Company Ltd. as a corporate entity to manage all their hotels.

After the death of Osano's brothers, Takamasa Osano inherited their property.

The land where the hotel is built is owned by the Kamehameha School, which rents the land.

The Royal Hawaiian is closed on 1 June 2008 for renovation. It reopened on January 20, 2009 as a member of the Luxury Starwood Hotels division. Renovation of the Royal Beach Tower was completed in 2010.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Pink color is considered popular in modern US architecture at that time. The architects are Warren and Wetmore from New York City.

The hotel's public spaces were redecorated in 1946 by Frances Elkins, sister architect David Adler.
