Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center , also known as the Pitchess Detention Center or just Pitchess , is a county detention and detention center all named men in honor Peter J. Pitchess is located just east of exit 173 Interstate 5 in the Castaic unrelated community in County Los Angeles in southern California.
The 2,620 acre site was formerly known as Wayside Honor Rancho, Castaic Honor Farm, or Wayside Jail (which is still sometimes known) and was nicknamed Wayside Drunk Farm in the 1940s because most inmates served time for alcohol-related violations - when first built for the use of prisons in 1938 it was the minimum security facility in which inmates work in agricultural environments. In 1983 it was renamed Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho . All agricultural operations were suspended in 1992 and the "rancho" component of the center was completely closed in 1995 due to budget constraints, at that time earning its current name. Run by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and divided into North Facilities, Eastern Facilities, Southern Facilities, and North District Correctional Facilities, each managed under various levels of prison security. In its current designation it is designed to accommodate about 8,600 people either awaiting trial or trial for various crimes (ie, "detention") or parole with a penalty of up to one year ("correction"), both groups collectively called "prisoners." In 1998 it was the largest prison complex in the district. It is also the oldest operating prison in this area. The Municipal and Superior courthouse where the Pitches inmates were brought in for examination and trial included Van Nuys, San Fernando, Burbank, Pasadena, Newhall, Antelope Valley, Malibu and downtown Los Angeles.

Northern Facilities
Built in 1987, the North Facility was originally built as an intermediate security structure, although it is now classified as a maximum security. It consists of four modules each containing four dormitories (each with a sleeping area, dining/living room, and restroom), eight discipline cells, a multipurpose room, a medical center, a visiting center, and three security posts. It was designed to house 90 villains per "block" dormitory for a total of 1,450 prisoners. During the first four years of existence it was operated under the command of the South Facility before obtaining its own unit commanders and operations staff.
The North Facility is unofficially closed in 2010 and currently holds less than one-third of the inmates' capacity. The only current function is to handle overflows from three other facilities.

Eastern Facilities
Built in 1951, the East Facility, which used to include bakeries and printing where prisoners received vocational training, began as a simple discipline housing unit for the minimum security prisoners working in the fields. In 1957, it became the first maximum security prison at the facility. It was designed to accommodate 110 villains per dormitory block and has a maximum capacity of 1,830 prisoners. Currently designed to accommodate about 850 inmates including 400 conditional offenders awaiting a Morrissey hearing. It consists of two "hard lock" modules and one inmate processing place. Starting January 2015, East Pitchess Detention Center is closed.
Southern Facilities
Built in 1971, the South Facility is a medium security prison offering vocational programs of inmates such as masons, dog care, and carpentry. Some of the inmates work in the crew at the Fire Department Training Camp of the Fire Department. 12, which is a sign in jail at a point that is affectionately called "Disneyland." It was designed to accommodate 85 criminals per block domitory and has a maximum capacity of 1,700 prisoners.
The South Facility is limited between November, 2001 and October, 2007 where it is called the Northern Annex.
Flame Camp
Fire Training Facilities The South Facility currently allows convicts convicted of non-serious, non-violent, and non-sexual offenses (mostly non-drug-related crime and theft and fraud) to participate for several months in fire fighting training physically demanding and to do so under the supervision of local law enforcement. This program is the result of the California Assembly Bill 109, the "rearrangement plan" of the country. Inmates participating in the program are distinguished by their orange jumper. On completion of the 80-hour program, the facility hosts an official graduation ceremony.
North County Correctional Facility
Known as "SuperMax" and distinct from the previously mentioned North Facility, the North County Correctional Facility (NCCF), built in 1990, is considered the highest law enforcement prison offering vocational training in printing, bread production and clothing manufacturing. It also includes a 16 bed dorm at the hospital. The rest of the facility is designed to accommodate 58 villains per dormitory block and has a capacity of 3,700 inmates.
Women Princess Village Project
On October 26, 2012 County Los Angeles gave written notice of his intention to create a female detention facility at the Pitchess Detention Center. The 21-acre facility will require dismantling most of the existing structures in the planned project area located adjacent to the South Facility. When completed, it will consist of a series of "cottages" one floor each containing a "pod" bed and, when combined with a bed in four existing structures that will not be destroyed, will be able to house 1,156 criminals. The Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood currently serves as a facility for all women. It has a capacity of 2,100 inmates.
Structure, amenities and other visitor services
- In 1951 Texaco discovered oil on a prison property. Rows of oil are still operating in the prison ground, as part of the Honor Rancho Oil Field.
- A cogeneration plant ("co-gen") was built in 1963 to provide electricity to the prison. This is located here: 34.4637 Â ° N 118,5939 Â ° W / 34.4637; -118.5939 .
- The center has a heliport called Sheriff's Wayside Heliport which operated in July 1972 and is located here: 34.4666 Â ° N 118.5953 Â ° W / 34.4666; -118.5953 .
