State Penitentiary - Cresson is medium security, all male correctional facilities, located on Route 22 USA, about 10 miles west of Altoona along the Old Route 22 in the western part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On April 17, 2012, a SCI-Pine Grove van crashed near Hollidaysburg, PA while carrying 10 inmates and 2 prisoners. No inmates escaped and some were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
On January 8, 2013 the state office announced the jail would be closed. The prison closed June 30, 2013 and the land was set up for sale by the state.

Under the Executive Order of Governor-General Dick Thornburgh in January 1983, this facility, formerly Lawrence Frick Hospital for mental illness, was transferred to the Correction Bureau for its current use. The construction/renovation process at Cresson is allocated at $ 20.6 Million. Construction/renovation began in 1984, and the design of new housing units for inmates has been made prototypes in future institutions throughout the commonwealth. The activation team was created in the fall of 1986. SCI Cresson opened in 1987, becoming a medium-security correctional facility for men.

Van Crash Inmates
On April 17, 2012, van SCI Pine Grove brought 10 inmates and 2 prisoners crashed near Hollidaysburg, Pa. All prisoners are accounted for. The van driver died. 10 inmates and 2 correctional officers were taken to Altoona Regional Hospital and treated for minor injuries. SCI Pine Grove, located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, is the maximum security facility for Young Adults Offenders. The Young Adult Offender Program (YAOP) is primarily designed for offenders aged 15-20 as adults because of the nature of the crime committed. YAOP meets their special needs for education, youth development and recreational activities, while providing a safe environment for the offenders.
