Facilities
The Central Michigan Correctional Facility consists of eight residential buildings that provide sixteen separate house units. Each house unit consists of 7-8 open beds, with 140-160 prisoners. Housing units can accommodate 2400 Level I detainees, which are more manageable within the facility (although they may have committed violent crimes) than higher-level detainees. There are separate buildings for administration, food services, academic programs, warehouse maintenance, and detainee services. The facility is able to provide routine medical and dental care on site. Serious medical problems were addressed in the Michigan Department of Repair department at Duane L. Waters Hospital in Jackson, and an emergency was handled by the nearest hospital.
Security
The facility is surrounded by two 12 foot (3.7 m) fences. The outer fence has wire razor rolls on the sides and top. The interior fence is a non-lethal electronic fence that is electronically monitored. The perimeter of the facility is also electronically monitored, with surveillance cameras, and by patrol of armed personnel.
Program
The Central Michigan Penitentiary offers several programs for prisoners, including pre-release preparation, recreation, psychological counseling, cognitive restructuring, substance abuse treatment, and voluntary self-help programs. The vocational program offers educational opportunities in custodial maintenance technology, business education technology, horticulture, and building trading. The academic program offers adult basic education classes and the development of general education. The facility also provides public and legal libraries, hobbies, religious services, and barber services.
