Editing is the process of selecting and preparing the written, visual, sound, and film media used to convey information. The editing process may involve correction, condensation, organization, and many other modifications made with the intent of producing a correct, consistent, accurate and complete job.

The editing process often begins with the author's idea for the job itself, continuing as a collaboration between the author and the editor when the work is created. Thus, editing can involve creative skills, human relationships, and a set of appropriate methods.

There are various editorial positions in the publication. Usually, one finds an editorial assistant reporting to senior-level staff and editorial directors reporting to senior executive editors. The senior executive editor is responsible for developing the product for its final release. The smaller the publication, the more these roles overlap.

The top editor in many publications can be known as editor-in-chief, executive editor, or editor only. A frequent and highly respected contributor to a magazine can earn a title editor editor-at-large or contributing. Middle-level newspaper editors often manage or help manage sections, such as business, sports, and features. In a US newspaper, the level below the top editor is usually the managing editor.

In the book publishing industry, editors can organize anthologies and other compilations, produce definitive editions by classical authors (scientific editors), and organize and manage contributions to multi-author books (symposium editors or volume editors). Obtaining a script or hiring a writer is the role of an acquisition editor or commissioning editor in a publisher. Finding marketable ideas and presenting them to the right author is the responsibility of the sponsoring editor.

Copy the right editor of spelling, grammar and align text to home style. Changes in the publishing industry since the 1980s have led to almost all copies of manuscript edits of books out of print to freelance copy editors.

In newspapers and wire services, copy editors write headlines and work on more substantive issues, such as ensuring accuracy, fairness, and taste. In some positions, they design pages and choose news to include. In English and Australian newspapers, the term is sub-editor . They can choose the layout of the publication and communicate with the printer. This editor may have title layout or design editor or (more so in the past) makeup editor .

Books and scientific journals

In a publishing environment, the editors of scientific books consist of three main types, each with a special responsibility:

  • acquisition editor (or commissioning editor in the United Kingdom), which contracts with the author to generate copies
  • Project editor or production editor , who sees a copy through its stages from manuscript to bound book and usually assumes most of the budget and schedule responsibilities
  • Copy editor or script editor , which prepares a copy for conversion into print.

In the case of volumes edited by many authors, before the manuscript is sent to the publisher, it has undergone substantive and linguistic editing by the volume editor, which works independently of the publisher.

As for scientific journals, where spontaneous delivery is more common than the assigned work, the journal editor's position editor or editor-in-chief replaces the publishing book acquisition editor, while the production editor and copy editor roles remain. However, other editors are sometimes involved in the making of scientific research articles. Called the editor of the author, this editor works with the authors to obtain a suitable script for the purpose before submitting to a scientific journal for publication.

The main difference between books and scientific editing journals and other types of editing lies in applying publisher standards to copies. Most academic publishers have a preferred style that usually dictates a specific dictionary and style guide - for example, Chicago Style Manual , MLA Style Manual or APA Publication Guidelines in the US, or New Hart's Regulations in the UK

Technical edit

Technical edits involve reviewing text written on technical topics, identifying usage errors and ensuring compliance with style guides.

Technical editing can include grammatical error corrections, misspellings, typos, incorrect punctuation, inconsistencies in usage, less structured sentences, false scientific terms, wrong units and dimensions, inconsistencies in significant numbers, technical ambivalence, technical disambiguation, statements contrary to common scientific knowledge, synopsis correction, content, indexes, titles and subheadings, correcting data and mapping presentations in research papers or reports, and correcting errors in quotations.

The big company dedicates experienced writers to technical editing functions. Organizations that can not afford to pay special editors typically have experienced the writing of coauthor's texts produced by inexperienced colleagues.

This helps if the technical editor is familiar with the subject being edited. The "technical" knowledge an editor gets from time to time when working on a particular product or technology does not give the editor an edge over others who have just started editing content related to that product or technology. But the important general skills are attention to detail, the ability to maintain focus while working through long pieces of text on complex topics, prudent in dealing with writers, and excellent communication skills.

Editing service

Editing is a growing field of work in the service industry. Paid editing services may be made available by special editing companies or by freelance editors.

Editing companies can use an internal editor team, depending on individual contractor networks or both. Such companies are capable of handling edits in a variety of topics and genres, depending on the skills of individual editors. The services provided by this editor may vary and may include proofreading, copy editing, online editing, progress editing, editing for search engine optimization (SEO) etc.

Self-working editors work directly for clients (eg, authors, publishers) or offer their services through editing companies, or both. They may specialize in editing types (eg, editing copies) and in specific subject areas. Those who work directly for authors and develop a professional relationship with them are called the author's editors.
